What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word Mustang? Tell me in the comments section below, the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear Mustang is an RWD Car, Burning rubber with a Loud V8 engine roaring to its redline. Now replace the V8, with an electric motor, change the RWD Drivetrain to AWD and instead of an angry looking 2 seater Coupe, and replace it with a Bulky SUV with lots of Boot space, how does it feel? Don’t feel awkward or weird about what I am talking about because all of the things I described above have taken the form of a Real car and the name goes by Mustang Mach E. If you don’t live under a rock, you may have probably heard about it, saw it and would have felt bad just like I did. The Mustang is one of the most favorite muscle cars ever and to give this legendary name to a family SUV with an electric powertrain is just not fair. Let’s look at the Mustang Mach E and see whether it’s worthy of carrying such a legendary name.
Design:-
The Mustang Mach E is a Family SUV, that’s meant to take you to for a good weekend vacation. It’s the ideal car for carrying your groceries or for picking up your children from school. So the design is clearly of an SUV, a small-sized SUV to be precise, like an Alfa Romeo Stelvio. The Mach E retains the aggressiveness from the Mustang, that’s for sure. The cuts, the curves, and the carvings together give the Mach E a Menacing look, then the lines start taking the shape of an SUV, and then slowing towards the rear, its slightly slanted which gives the appearance of a coupe. The taillights have been taken from the Mustang too, and with the wide SUV Profile of the Mach-E, I would say that it kind of suits it. The design of the wheels isn’t totally bland either, they have a bit of aggressive element to them which makes them look kind of cool, and all I can say regarding the design is that Ford’s effort to make the Mach E look as Mustang as possible, hasn’t gone into vain. It still looks like a proper Mustang, even though it has taken the shape of an SUV and its functionalities have been changed.
Motors & Performance:-
The Mach E can be ordered with either rear-wheel drive or a dual-motor four-wheel-drive version, I choose to go with the all-wheel-drive version. The Standard Mach e comes with a 75 kWh battery with 254 Horses and can go all the way up to a 99 kWh battery with 332 Horsepower. But when we are talking about electric cars, power isn’t the thing we are looking for, we look at the torque numbers. The base Mach E alone comes with 306 Pound ft. of torque and the all-wheel-drive one can make things even more fun with 429 Pound ft. torque right on tap. Also, being an electric car, the acceleration has to be quick, because that is the primary reason why people buy electric cars. Ford claims that the Base Mach E will do 0 to 60 Mph in under 8 seconds, I know this might not sound very fast, but when you consider the fact that a 2 tonne SUV carrying 5 passengers and your luggage with just a 75 Kwh battery is doing 0 to 60 Mph in under 8 seconds, you really start to appreciate the SUV for what it does. Being a Family SUV, the Mach E has to have a good range, which is one of the most important factors in a practical family car. The range not being too shabby is 280 Miles for the base Mach E and goes up to 335 Miles in the topmost version. Mach-E also needs to be a good Highway cruiser and thus top speed is an important factor for people who are going to buy this car for long-distance touring. The Top speed has been limited to 111 Mph by a ford which is around 177 Kmph. On any standard highway, this top speed is good enough unless you are on the Autobahn itself, then the top speed might bother you.
Interior:-
The Mustang Mach E being on the affordable side has quite some quirks in it. Let’s start with the obvious one. The first thing you will notice is that there are no door handles. Of course, they help with the aerodynamics of the car, but it has more to it than just being normal door handles. You can open the car by using your phone as a key, but if you don’t have your phone, you can press the button on the door side and it will open, but you can also put in a 4 digit code to lock the car. But let’s assume that someone gets into your car, then what will happen, well ford thought about this too and you can put a 4 digit code inside the car as well, to prevent it from starting by any false methods. These are just some of the quirky stuff about the Mach e. The Interior of the Mach E has clearly been inspired by Tesla, they have taken the same minimalistic approach that Tesla takes towards its cars. You have got a large screen in the middle that provides you with all the necessary info. But it’s not entirely all bland, you do get your gear selector in the middle and a volume button in the middle of the screen, which is really important. You also get a small and sleek behind the steering wheel which provides the driver with only the necessary info the driver needs. There are some buttons on the steering wheel as you may notice, they are placed to control the functions on the screens, and they work quite smoothly. The best thing about the screen is that it doesn’t lag, not even a bit. The seats are fully adjustable and there are multiple ways in which you can adjust them, they are very comfortable, the padding in the seats has been put in the right place at the right spot and the overall ergonomics of the car are great. There is plenty of room in the back for passengers, ample amount of headroom and legroom. The boot space is rated at 400 liters in the rear which is quite big, but smaller when compared to its competition the Porsche Macan, but it makes up for it by providing a 100-liter boot in the front that’s washable, overall the interior is great and the comfort levels are up to the mark.
Conclusion:-
The Mustang Mach E got a lot of hate from the public when it was launched, car enthusiasts around the world criticized ford for putting the name Mustang on an Electric family SUV, just like how Porsche was criticized for putting the name Turbo S on the Taycan, but in my opinion, the Mach E is a great car. The interior, the handling, and the design everything has been done right by Ford and I would like to congratulate ford for making such a great car, in one of their initial attempts.
